RUI ABREU — is a Portuguese type and graphic designer. He studied Graphic Design at Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto, where he graduated in 2003.
He launched his first typefaces in 2006, and has been making fonts since then along with his job as an interactive media designer.

BOB AUFULDISH — founded Aufuldish & Warinner with Kathy Warinner in 1990 and has taught at the California College of the Arts since 1991. With A&W, Bob has designed diverse projects for clients such as Advent Software, American Institute of Architects, Center for Creative Photography, Chronicle Books, Denver Art Museum, Emigre, the Logan Collection Vail, Moore Ruble Yudell Architects, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and the State Compensation Insurance Fund.
His digital type foundry, fontBoy, was launched in 1995 to manufacture and distribute his fonts.
He has participated in a number of exhibitions, including Icons: Magnets of Meaning and Fertile Ground: CCA at 100 at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and has lectured across the United States.
His work has been included in competitions and publications sponsored by the American Association of Museums, the American Center for Design, the American Institute of Graphic Arts, Communication Arts, Critique, DesignNet (Korea), dpi (Taiwan), Graphis, How, I.D., Idea, the New York Type Directors’ Club, and Print, among others.

CAROLINA DE BARTOLO — is a creative director, designer, author, and publisher. A graduate of the School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University, she began working in New York. Eventually relocating to California where she became heavily involved with the AIGA while teaching at Academy of Art University. Carolina is the author of Explorations in Typography, an award-winning typography textbook.

JAMES BEALL — is a graphic and type designer located in the San Francisco Bay Area. He holds a BFA in Graphic Design from California College of the Arts, and is the Chief Technologist at PSY/OPS Type Foundry where he has been crafting, coding and mastering thousands of impeccable fonts. James worked as a designer at Glyfyx Inc., and co-teached the technical sessions at the Alphabetic Order. He is responsible for the beloved Bitblox wooden pixel blocks.
When not working or watching animated shows, you can find him building with Lego and running the EverydayBricks website.

ROBERT BECK — is an award-winning graphic designer living in Montreal, Quebec Canada.

LARS BERGQUIST — of Timberwolf Type, born in 1936, is a self-proclaimed “leftover from the age of lead type and letterpress printing.” His first avocation was history, which may well explain his love of classical letterforms, historically significant typefaces and “…fuddy-duddy typography in general.” Recently retired from a lifetime in the technically advanced field of reference publishing, he has decided to spend his next life as a dedicated type designer.
His typeface Absolut Type — published by PSY/OPS Type Foundry as Aalborg — received a Certificate of Excellence in the Bukva:raz! type contest arranged by the ATypI in 2001.
He has been happily married to the same woman since 1964, lives outside Stockholm, Sweden, and has two daughters and a grandson. His atypical interests are history, small arms, photography and hiking in the mountains of Lapland.

RXC — RODRIGO XAVIER CAVAZOS — is Founder and Principal of PSY/OPS Type Foundry, and an Adjunct Professor at California College of the Arts, where he’s taught the acclaimed Type Design Studio since 2006.
His fixation with type and lettering began in 1984 with the discovery of a bitmap font editor for Apple II computers. Since dedicating himself full-time to type development in the early nineties, he’s had the privilege of collaborating with many notable type designers and foundries. He, his wife, and son live in a creekside bungalow seven train stops from downtown SF. When not working on a font, he can be found working on another font.
His work has appeared in numerous books and periodicals, including Just My Type by Simon Garfield and Typography Sketchbooks by Steven Heller. He has spoken at many colleges and design events, including TYPO SF.

MARIO FELICIANO — began plumbing the typographic depths in the early 1990s, while designing for several magazines, including ‘SurfPortugal’. During his initial rounds of experimentation he became progressively captivated by the historical aspects of typography, especially as they pertain to Portugal and its written language. By 1997 he had published a number of his designs, and was the Portuguese delegate for ATypI; but by this point his involvement in type consisted of pure research and investigation. In 1999 Adobe published Mário’s whimsical Strumph family, which he had designed five years prior; and he became the Portuguese agent for The Enschedé Font Foundry. In recent years, he has designed several proprietary typefaces while continuing his research, and has begun the foundation for the much anticipated Feliciano Type Foundry. When not working, Mário can be found surfing, golfing, or practicing yoga in and about Lisbon.

STEFAN HATTENBACH — is an espresso-fueled art director and graphic designer specializing in type and logo solutions. After two decades in the industry, a third of that running his own studio (MAC Rhino), he has managed to keep his work strong and compelling via a dynamic balance of experimentation and traditionalism: a blend which has worked to the benefit of clients such as Greenpeace, Amnesty International, Telia, and Hennes & Mauritz.
He is an avid traveler with a special passion for Italy, and proudly claims A.S. Roma as his favorite soccer team. He, wife Catharina, son Victor and daughter Sarah live in a sunny flat in downtown Stockholm.

JULIEN JANISZEWSKI — holds a diploma in graphic design and another in typography from the École Estienne. After a few years as a designer-in-employ, he now runs his own studio and has also co-founded a multi-disciplinary design workshop called Module. A native of Paris, and recently married; when not immersing himself in things typographic, he enjoys a spot of experimental cinema.

GÁBOR ‘GABI’ KÓTHAY — is a type designer, multi-disciplinary artist, and art teacher. He is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts, Budapest, and has been designing professionally since 1991.
His work has been showcased in annuals and magazines including ‘Creative Review’, ‘Item’, and ‘Punctum’, and he has won multiple awards for his installations. He, his wife and daughters make their home in Szeged, Hungary. His type collection is called Fontana.

PHILIP KRAYNA — has been exploring the world of graphic design for more than a decade. His interest in typography was sparked while still in college when he worked at SMART magazine with Roger Black, Jonathan Hoeffler and other future Font Bureau alumni.
Travels to Central America, East Europe, and even his hometown of Buffalo NY further piqued his interest in rare typographies and stylistic movements, and his observations and explorations lead to articles for ‘Print’, ‘Communication Arts’, and ‘Metropolis’.
He has also served as a design instructor at the California College of Arts and Crafts, and the University of Santa Cruz Extension. As a core member of the Bay Area’s letterpress community, he curated the acclaimed ‘Makeready’ exhibit at the San Francisco Center for the Book, and has designed and printed numerous letterpress gems. MATTHIJS VAN LEEUWEN — (b.1977, the Hague, the Netherlands) is a recent graduate of the HKA (Hogeschool voor de kunsten / Arnhem institute for the Arts), where he interned with Lex Reitsma during his final year. Even prior to his days at the HKA, typography (and type design in particular) has been a passion for him and he plans to maintain this focus in future work whenever possible. He finds inspiration in movies, music (from Bach’s ‘Musical Offering’ to the latest Missy Elliot album) and literature. He currently lives in Arnhem with his lovely girlfriend Daniëlle and their cat Zoë. His newly founded design atelier is called plein-publiek.

MONICA MACCAUX — is a graphic designer, type designer, and educator located in Reno, Nevada. She holds a BFA in Communications Design from Pratt Institute of the Arts and an MFA in Graphic Design from Otis College of Art. Monica is a professor of Graphic Design at the University of Nevada. She is the Creative Director at Blue Taco Design + Type where she brings athletics into type and design. While staying focused on communicating clearly with fun, witty, and concise designs.
She is an avid athlete, that is interested in how athletics impacts and interacts with type and design.

TODD MASSUI — is a print & new media designer working in Honolulu, Hawaii.

PABLO A MEDINA — is an artist, type designer, and professor. He is currently running the studio Design is Culture based in New York. Where he has been designing type for over 20 years. He has been exhibited by the Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt Museum and is a recipient of the Art Directors Club Young Gun award. He has served as Design Lead at the Natural Resources Defense Council. Pablo has taught art and design at Parson School of Design, Maryland Institute College of Art, and at California College of the Arts.

STEVE MEHALLO — is an art director, designer, and cartoonist based in Sacramento, California. His sprawling ranch-style house is a living museum of 40s & 50s Americana.

WESLEY POOLE — is a graphic designer and fine artist originally based in Napa, California. He is known all over for his work with the wine industry. His paintings can be found in private collections across the US. Recently, Poole has relocated to Hawaii and taken up type design.

CLAUDIO RODIL — studied electronics, system analysis, and worked as a DJ prior to receiving his Design degree from the University of Buenos Aires in 1990. He began his professional career in New York City, but promptly relocated to Madrid after the first winter. During the next six years he worked at several top studios, specializing in corporate identity, packaging, and publication design.
He currently runs his own multi-disciplinary design company in Madrid. He is an avowed “vinyl freak” with several thousand records (and counting) in his collection; and he contributes reviews and articles to audio magazines. In his free time he ventures near and far in search of unique travel experiences, interesting cuisine, and good wine.

ANDRÉ SIMARD — During his three-decade career in graphic design, André Simard has dedicated himself to finding the perfect typographic solutions for his clients. As a result of this intensive focus, he has grown to love and respect the beauty and communicative power of the alphabet in all its stylistic incarnations.
In 2005, he began a migration from designing with type, to actually designing type. Harfang Pro is the second typeface he has created.
André resides in Rouyn-Noranda, Québec, Canada.

GÖRAN SÖDERSTRÖM — (b. 1974) is a self-taught type designer and font developer from Sweden. The project that started his obsession with type in 1994 was the initial sketches for Exemplar, but it was not until 2006 (when PSY/OPS decided to publish his typeface) that he took this obsession seriously, and started his own type studio, Autodidakt.
Today, Göran believes that his mission in life is to create “the missing typefaces”, which according to himself are not that many, and of course, having fun while doing them.
Pre font obsession, Göran has worked at various advertising agencies in Stockholm, where he has always had a typographic focus. He currently works at Pangea Design. When not working on typefaces, he likes to pick up one of his favourite instruments, the acoustic guitar or the acoustic bass guitar.

CHIHARU TANAKA — was born and raised in Tottori, Japan. She completed her Bachelor’s degree in Textile Design at the Tama Art University, Tokyo. She worked in Tokyo at the Creative Communication Company Lesmains as a designer for four years before leaving Japan in 2005 to pursue further education in the United States. In 2009, she received her MFA in Graphic Design from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.
Her design practice is shaped by her experiences in different cultures and in textile design, advertising, graphic design and type design, which was the focus of her Masters Thesis. Because of her experience living and working in two different cultures, she has always had an interest in finding a balance between Eastern and Western design. She is especially passionate about creating functional and innovative typefaces.

JACK USINE — founded the SMeltery type foundry in 2002 during his studies at the Fine Arts School of Bordeaux. Since 2005 he has been working as graphic designer with Fanny Garcia at the Garcia Usine studio (GUsto). He is also an active member of the collectives TT and Sainte-Machine.

MICHEL VALOIS — is a graphic & type designer, and has taught typography at Montreal ICARI (Institut de Création Artistique et de Recherche Infographique). Along with his commercial type releases, he has developed custom designs including a full-character proprietary face for Lacroix Skis of France. He has worked in-house for Epoxy Communications, and consulted for Atelier in16, Paprika, and Jager DiPaola Kemp Design. As a free agent he is now concentrating on the art/theatre sector and the music industry.
His work has been featured ID Magazine, Creative Review, Luerzer’s Archive, HOW Magazine, Type Directors Club, Applied Arts Magazine, French Paper Excellence, Society of Graphic Designers of Canada, Grafika, This End Up, Typographics 3 & 4, and Printed Matter, among others. His work for the music industry has been recognized by the JUNO & ADISQ Awards. Michel and his girlfriend Andrea live & work in downtown Montreal. They share a passion for travel, particularly the sites and flavors of Europe, and always look forward to new opportunities to explore the globe.

PAUL VERES — grew up in New York, attended Pratt and City College, and received his masters at CUNY. Since transplanting to California, he’s designed & illustrated for several non-profit organizations, and has painted the signage for the Berkeley Repertory Theatre for over 20 years. A teacher by day and artist by night, his typeface designs grew directly out of his training in, and teaching of calligraphy: “Eventually, working with letterforms developed into the crazy idea that I could create fonts…” He’s gone on to publish his graceful pen-based typefaces with AGFA-Monotype, Linotype, and PSY/OPS. Paul resides in a bright, art-filled house in the heart of Berkeley.

JOHN WIESE — is an artist, musician, and recent graduate of the Art Center in Los Angeles.

ANUTHIN ‘NEWT’ WONGSUNKAKON — is an award-winning graphic & type designer based in Bangkok, Thailand. His fonts have been used in magazines such as ‘Blue’, ‘Men’s Health 18’, and ‘Mono’, and in the new identity for Choice Hotel Group. He has written critical essays on design for art4d, ABCD (Alternate Bangkok Council of Design), and for his own book as well. His typographic work has been recognized by the Type Directors Club of New York. He also teaches graphic design at Chulalongkorn, Bangkok University and is a visiting lecturer at Rangsit University. His studio is called Behaviour Group.
